Which heroes run the U.S. box office? Four boys… and now a girl. Wonder Woman has booted Iron Man 3 out of the American box office’s top five biggest super hero movies.

WB and DC’s runaway hit Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot sits at $409 million as of Monday, just slightly surpassing Iron Man 3’s 2013 box office pull by less than $100k. Here’s how the Top 5 Super Hero Films now stack up domestically:

  1. The Avengers: $623.3 million
  2. The Dark Knight: $534.8 million
  3. Avengers: Age of Ultron: $459 million
  4. The Dark Knight Rises: $448.1 million
  5. Wonder Woman: $409 million (and growing!)

It’s unlikely that Wonder Woman will best The Dark Knight Rises’ total since the former was just released digitally and the DVD/Blu-ray is set to be released later this month. Still, its success should be encouraging to studios (looking at you, Marvel) who’ve thought that a female-led super hero movie can’t be a massive box office hit.

Good word of mouth certainly helped catapult Wonder Woman into the top five. The movie’s opening weekend made about $60 million less than the four movies ranking above it. The box office stayed strong as the summer rolled on thanks to people raving about the latest DC movie.

Meanwhile, Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins are gearing up for Wonder Woman 2, which is set to hit theaters in 2019. Based on what we see in the list above (two Avengers movies, two Dark Knight movies), it looks like the sequel will be very very successful.
