When a comic book movie is as unquestionably successful as Wonder Woman, you can’t help but wonder what this means for a sequel…

It’s not a stretch to start hoping for more Wonder Woman movies, especially since the DC Multiverse is just starting to get its footing, as the upcoming Aquaman and movies are definitely highly anticipated.

It’s too early to know specifics, but here’s what we know so far about the next chapter of Wonder Woman‘s story, besides whatever role she may play in the Justice League due to hit theaters this fall.

If there’s a sequel, Gal Gadot will be our ‘Wonder Woman’

Rejoice! Like many superhero leads these days, Gal Gadot signed on with an option for Wonder Woman 2, as well as appearances in other DC movies. We will likely see her in Justice League, but this option guarantees that as long as the studio wants to make a sequel to Wonder Woman, Diana Prince will be played by Gal Gadot. Proceed dancing with joy.

Patty Jenkins is NOT signed on for a sequel, but could be back

Patty Jenkins only signed on to direct Wonder Woman, but as she and Gal Gadot made such a fantastic pair, we can only imagine she will soon be in negotiations to continue at the helm of the ‘Wonder Woman’ franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter cites sources that say “the studio intends to begin negotiations with Jenkins shortly,” and that “Jenkins could not only return to the director’s chair on Wonder Woman 2 but also could ink a more expansive deal that would allow her to work with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns on a script treatment for that movie and possibly others as well.”

If Patty Jenkins does continue on as director, she already knows where it will be set

EW talked to our fearless leader back in April, and she discussed wanting to set a possible Wonder Woman sequel in America. “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right. She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

Other details regarding casting and story choices are bound to be scarce for a few more weeks and months until Warner Bros. can finish negotiations with Patty Jenkins and begin the scripting process.

For now, we can just revel in the joy of having a successful first movie out in the world, anticipate it’s arrival on DVD/Blu-ray so we can watch it endlessly, and start counting the days until San Diego Comic Con where huge announcements are sometimes made. We’ll be crossing our fingers for good news!
