Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has addressed the “false assumptions” made about a Wonder Woman 2 tease.

Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince in the sequel to the hugely successful Wonder Woman, and Patty Jenkins is back to direct!

This unstoppable duo is sure to deliver another masterpiece of a film — but one teasing quote from Jenkins left some fans worried about one particular aspect of Wonder Woman’s story.

Appearing on Variety’s Playback podcast, Jenkins talked about the sequel story, saying (as quoted by Collider):

“It’s got great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.”

It was the ‘love story’ insert that struck a chord with fans, either because they don’t want to see Diana and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine)’s romance overshadowed or because it would be nice to, for once, not have a female superhero weighed down by a romance arc.

However, Patty Jenkins took to Twitter to clear up the confusion (or rather, add some more confusion), writing:

So what does this mean? I’m afraid to make any assumptions that’ll get me ~called out~, but the use of the term ‘love story’ might have another connotation than romance. It could be referring to Diana’s love of humanity, love of her people, love of herself, love of her friends — love of a female companion, perhaps, though that seems like wishful thinking considering the superhero movie track record.

The only thing that’s certain is that nothing is certain, and we have to wait for more clues about the plot of Wonder Woman 2 before we judge!

Wonder Woman 2 is slated to be released on November 1, 2019.
