Heads up, Wonder Woman fans. It seems we have an even longer wait for Wonder Woman 1984 as Warner Bros. pushed back the film’s release.

Fans have been waiting for a new Wonder Woman movie ever since the Gal Gadot-led film smashed box office records in the summer of 2017. And while the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was slated for a winter 2019 release, Warner Bros. just announced that the movie will be pushed back seven months to release on July 5, 2020.

Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, tweeted out the news and attributed the release date change to the “changing landscape” of the other movies in the competitive space.

It is a sentiment that the Warner Bros president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein echoed in a statement seen in The Hollywood Reporter just after Gadot’s tweet was sent out. Goldstein said of the move, “We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer, so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”

And while it’s a bummer to have to wait longer for the movie, it does make sense for the franchise. Moving Wonder Woman 1984 to the summer keeps it consistent with the first film, and it means that Diana Prince’s second big-screen adventure won’t be releasing as closely to another buzzed-about superhero flick (or super villain, in this case), Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

It seems like the move will only be a positive one for Wonder Woman 1984, and even though we’re sad about having to wait a bit longer for the sequel, we’re glad Warner Bros. is setting the movie up for success. Wonder Woman 1984 will open in movie theaters everywhere on July 5, 2020, and we just can’t wait.
