Lots of exciting news for X-Men fans as the next film will take place in the ’90s and the final solo Wolverine film will be rated R!

Though the first bit of news isn’t surprising, it is exciting (especially for those of us who grew up in the ’90s). “The next one is set in the ’90s,” Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed to ComingSoon.net.

This makes sense since the franchise has made a pattern of skipping ahead every 10 years. X-Men: First Class took place in the ’60s, X-Men: Days of Future Past in the ’70s, and with X-Men: Apocalypse in the ’80s. Whether Kinberg was referencing New Mutants, which is currently in development, or another X-men film remains to be seen.

A little more surprising is the decision for Wolverine 3 to be rated R! After Deadpool’s success with being rated R, fans have been waiting to see if any other films would follow. According to Collider, Kinberg stated, “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

He went on to say that, “It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.” It’s very intriguing to hear that we’ll get something completely different from what we’re used to seeing in the solo Wolverine films. If any fans are weary of his story line by now, this could be 20th Century Fox’s chance to reel them back in!
