Universal Studios Hollywood announced this morning that their Wizarding World of Harry Potter will open in “Spring 2016.”

While it’s not an exact date, it does mean we’re most likely one year away from the grand opening of Hollywood’s Harry Potter land (technically “spring” ends on June 21). Universal probably doesn’t want to set an exact date this early in the event they hit construction delays.

In addition today, Universal confirmed several aspects of the new land: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, the signature ride at the Wizarding World, will be in 3D (unlike the same ride at Universal Orlando). Wizarding World Hollywood will also include Universal Hollywood’s first outdoor rollercoaster, “Flight of the Hippogriff,” as well as eight retail shops (Honeydukes, Ollivanders, Owl Post, Zonko’s Joke Shop, Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment, Dervish and Banges, Gladrags Wizardwear and Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods) and food and beverages at The Three Broomsticks and the Hog’s Head pub.

In other words, Wizarding World Hollywood is nearly a clone of its Orlando counterpart. The one major difference is that the latter has the Dueling Dragons rollercoaster which existed before the Wizarding World was built (it was re-themed for the Harry Potter land).

Wizarding World Osaka in Japan boasts a unique feature: The Great Lake. Some fans were hoping that Hollywood’s land would include a special feature of its own, but as of this time we’ve yet to hear about something special.

Notably, Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World is the only one with the massive Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Express expansion which opened this time last year.

For those of you who live in the Hollywood area, know this: The Wizarding World Hollywood construction is plainly visible from the 101 and 134 freeways. If you drive on those roads and look towards Universal you’ll be able to see Hogwarts Castle.
