A new version of The Wizard of Oz is officially on the horizon over at New Line Cinema.

According to Deadline, New Line Cinema is currently in the process of developing an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s timeless children’s classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The studio has already found its director for the project in none other than Watchmen vet Nicole Kassell.

Though Baum’s classic book has been adapted for the big and small screen multiple times over the years, it’s safe to say that the 1939 movie musical starring Judy Garland as Dorothy is undoubtedly the most recognizable.

Given the lasting popularity of MGM’s 1939 adaptation, there’s no denying that Kassell will have some incredibly large ruby slippers to fill. But the director seems to be up for the challenge of putting her own stamp on the beloved story.

In a statement announcing her involvement with the project, Kassell spoke of how excited she is to have been tasked with reimagining The Wizard of Oz for the big screen.

The statement also hints at the idea that long time fans shouldn’t expect New Line’s take to be a direct remake of the MGM classic.

“While the 1939 musical is part of my DNA, I am exhilarated and humbled by the responsibility of re-imagining such a legendary tale,” said Kassell.

“The opportunity to examine the original themes— the quest for courage, love, wisdom, and home— feels more timely and urgent than ever. These are profoundly iconic shoes to fill, and I am eager to dance alongside these heroes of my childhood as we pave a newly minted yellow brick road!”

There is currently no word on when we might expect to see New Line’s Wizard of Oz remake to hit the big screen.
