Ava DuVernay is gearing up to delve into the world of animation.

Deadline reports that Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay is working with Warner Brothers Animation to adapt the Wings of Fire books into an animated series.

Based on Tui T. Sutherland’s best selling Wings of Fire books, the series of fantasy novels takes place in the fictional continents of Pyrrhia and Pantala— both inhabited by dragons. The books focus on a variety of young dragons as they set out to fulfill their respective prophecies, with each book featuring a different main character.

Warner Bros. Animation’s acquisition of the rights includes all 15 of Sutherland’s novels, in addition to three graphic novels, and four short stories.

Currently, the plan is to adapt Wings of Fire into an animated series made for television. Given the trove of Sutherland’s titles that are included with the acquisition, there’s sure to be no shortage of source material for DuVernay and Warner Bros. to use as inspiration for the forthcoming series!

As for Sutherland, the author will be involved as an executive producer on the adaptation along with DuVernay, who will also serve as an executive producer through her ARRAY Filmworks banner.

Currently, there’s no word with regards to when the Wings of Fire animated series might premiere, or on which of Warner Bros. platforms it’ll find its home at.

As for Ava DuVernay, fans of the director won’t be left wanting for content while they wait for Wings of Fire.

Currently, DuVernay is working on two TV movies (DMZ, Battle of Versailles), in addition to working on the big screen adaptation of DC comics’ The New Gods.
