Will Smith has revealed that he plans on giving up on blockbuster films after his latest film After Earth flopped at the box office.

The actor who was once the king of summer blockbusters is denouncing them after his latest film flopped at the box office. Will Smith spoke with Digital Spy recently and revealed to the interviewer that it has “been an absolute necessity that the movie be a blockbuster, but I think I’m going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices.” It seems that the actor may have realized that it’s time to focus on finding some higher quality material to delve into. Check out the interview below:

Smith went on to say that he truly loves making movies, and that what gets him most excited is having people “wrapped in a story and being able to deliver that emotional punch line at the end of the story.” Will Smith’s latest film After Earth, starring his son Jaden, went on to open #3 at the box office, behind Fast & Furious 6 and Now You See Me. In the interview, Smith incorrectly said that his worst fear was his film being #2 at the box office on its opening weekend.

Director M. Night Shyamalan helmed After Earth, but don’t let anyone fool you, this was Will Smith’s project. Smith created the story and went to M. Night Shyamalan to ask him to direct the film. Smith may have finally realized that injecting his son Jaden into films he’s also starring in may not be the best route for success.

Currently, After Earth holds an abysmal 12% on Rottentomatoes, and has only grossed $36.5 million at the box office. There is still some hope for the film, which cost a reported $130 million to produce, as it’s yet to hit many of its international markets, where Will Smith usually pulls in a majority of his bigger box office numbers.
