Will Harrison Ford be in the new Star Wars? The actor has decided not to return to play Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII.

The question of whether or not Harrison Ford would indeed return to Star Wars: Episode VII has been one that has received “great interest” for a very long time. We’ve been reaching out to Ford for months to see if we could get an official comment, and today, April 1, he finally returned our request.

Hypable: Rumors that you will be returning for Star Wars: Episode VII have been swirling for months. Can you say whether or not you’ll officially be back?

Harrison Ford: There was a time when I thought that I would probably play Han Solo again, but that was a long time ago. The thing is, I’ve come to realize over my career that Han is a character that just doesn’t interest me. I’ve played much deeper, more interesting characters over the course of my career, and that’s the kind of thing I want to keep doing. How old am I? [We informed Ford he was 71.] 71, yeah. That’s too old for me to keep playing boring characters that I don’t want to play.

Hypable: Did Disney not make you a big enough offer?

Ford: They made me an offer, but the suffering I would have had to put myself through just wasn’t worth it. Don’t get me wrong, I love money. And we all know I’ve accepted plenty of roles just because my cash-stuffed mattress was getting a little soft. But no amount of money is worth doing a job that you’re going to hate doing.

Hypable: There was no offer that you would have accepted? If there is we’ll send this transcript to Disney straight away.

Ford: I asked them to give me the company, but they declined.

Hypable: LucasFilm?

Ford: No, all of Disney. I just wanted to make sure there was never another Star Wars movie, and the only way to do that was by taking control of the company.

Hypable: You’re crazy.

Ford then hung up the phone.

We do not yet know what direction Star Wars: Episode VII director and co-writer J.J. Abrams will go after Ford has walked away so late in the process. The movie is scheduled to begin shooting in May and the script is set 30 years after the events of Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

There’s likely no time to write him out now, so Abrams will have to come up with something quick.

We have an idea that’s all the rage these days. Insert a completely CGI Han Solo into the movie. You’re welcome, Abrams.
