Despite MacGruber‘s disappointing box office figures, director Jorma Taccone has confirmed that he and Saturday Night Live star Will Forte are collaborating on a sequel.

The original picture was born out of a skit performed by Forte on SNL, also starring Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillipe. While the sketch was poorly received, the film exceeded critical expectations yet failed to impress on ticket sales. On a budget of $10 million, the comedy only grossed a frankly abysmal $9.2 mil. worldwide. So while it is unlikely that studios will be fighting for MacGruber 2‘s rights, fans of the original will definitely be excited at the prospect of a sequel.

Taccone confirmed the duo’s plans to ScreenCrush:

“It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.”

For those of you who missed the first entry (and judging by the box office receipts, there were plenty of you), you can check out one of the original SNL skits below.
