Wicked just became the first Broadway musical in history to make over $3 million in a single week.

In the week ending December 29, Wicked grossed $3.2 million from nine performances. This comes after a banner year for the musical – it celebrated its tenth anniversary back in October, one of precious few musicals to ever do so. It is the third-highest-grossing show ever on Broadway, with a total of nearly $800 million (behind only Lion King and Phantom of the Opera). The show has made $3.2 billion worldwide, and is one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

Wicked was not the only show making tons of money this week. The Lion King (Wicked’s top competitor from week to week) also saw its highest-grossing week ever ($2.8 million), and Kinky Boots saw a gross half-a-million higher than its previous record. The soon-to-close revival of Annie played to a theater that was a staggering 116.3% full – it’s not clear how this is even possible; audience members must have been crammed into every aisle and nook.

Historically, all Broadway shows have their best weeks during the Christmas holidays. The mobs of tourists fill theaters, and they are willing to pay top dollar to do so. To take advantage of this, most shows add a ninth performance to the standard eight-show week. The record for highest-grossing week ever that Wicked just broke was also held by Wicked, made during last year’s Christmas week ($2.95 million). The record before that was held by the ill-fated Spiderman, made during Christmas week 2011 ($2.94 million).

Do you think Wicked can top itself again next year?

Thanks, Playbill.
