This past week’s crossover event for The Originals and The Vampire Diaries was a first for the two shows, and we hope it wasn’t the last.

When we first learned that Stefan Salvatore was going to be making his way to New Orleans for an episode of respite, we were psyched. The Salvatore brothers and the Mikaelsons have been separate for far too long. If you think back to the glory days of The Vampire Diaries, it was when Klaus was wreaking havoc right and left trying to get his hands on Elena or Stefan for one reason or another.

Stefan’s trip to the Quarter just reminded us of how much fun can be had when he and Klaus are in the same room for more than a minute. We would gladly welcome more crossovers, especially if it meant more interactions between the Mystic Falls crew and the Mikaelson family. The Originals and The Vampire Diaries have the unique ability to involve each other without hindering the progress on each show’s individual storyline. Considering that Mystic Falls and New Orleans are only a 14 hour road trip or 4 hour flight away, it’s not hard to imagine a world where these two groups of friends call on each other in times of need.

Here are three ways we could see the shows crossing over that could totally work and would be new territory for television in general.

1. Share a villain.

It’s not completely out of the realm of possibility for the two shows to share one horrible villain between them for a season. If a threat loomed large enough over the whole vampire/supernatural community, it wouldn’t be hard to see them coordinating efforts over the distance, even if we only got one or two visits from characters throughout the course of the season.

2. Portray a love story that crosses series’ boundaries

We’re not saying that it would have to be Klaus and Caroline, but… it could be. Knowing that three years from now Caroline and Stefan are not together, and seeing that she still knows that Klaus would be there for her enough to hit the road for his help does lead us to believe that something still simmers between the two. We wouldn’t be opposed to seeing it play out in a totally new way. Or, there are plenty of other characters that could fall for each other. Marcel has had zero social life since Rebekah disappeared a season ago. Maybe he and one of the heretics could hit it off? You never know.

3. Try a two-hour movie-like event with no/limited commercials

These shows already lend themselves to escapism, as they feel real, but if were presented with a giant two hour story full of twists and turns without a break, much like a movie, we could see it making a huge impact on both stories. It would certainly be a must see event for this fan. The shows have the potential for theatrical-level hijinks, they just need the vehicle to get there.
