The Fault in Our Stars is definitely a book and adaptation on everyone’s radar. Stephen Chbosky is fresh off his directorial debut of The Perks of Being a Wallflower which has similarities to The Fault in Our Stars and would be an excellent choice to direct the film.

After seeing a tweet between Stephen Chbosky and Scott Neustadter, one of the writers for The Fault in Our Stars, it made us think of all the wonderful reasons Chbosky should direct the film.

He Understands the Material

Stephen Chbosky wrote realistic teenage fiction so raw and real that it still resonates with today’s youth. While The Fault in Our Stars isn’t considered controversial it is definitely weighty material that if not handled correctly will not translate to screen. Chbosky has an ability to understand teenagers and tell their story in away that translates to all ages. The Perks of Being a Wallflower was about being a teenager and trying to find your way through life’s most unexpected turns. The Fault in Our Stars deals with knowing your life is limited and making the best of it while still dealing with normal teenage stuff.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is amazing

Have you seen it? If not get yourself to a movie theater because you are missing out on one of the year’s best films. Yes, Chbosky was the author, writer, and direct of Perks but that just proves he can handle the material in all forms. Chbosky managed to elicit stellar performances from the young cast especially Ezra Miller who should be nominated for an Oscar. Again, it goes back to Chbosky understanding the plight of the teenager.

He understands how to transition a book to film successfully

Stephen Chbosky is an author, screen writer and director. He understands all facets of taking a novel and making it come alive on screen. As reader’s we all know that not every book adapted into a film is a good choice (Eragon anyone?) but in the hands of the right person an adaptation can capture the essence of the book and take the movie to the next level.

Just for reference, here is the tweet about his meeting Neustradter. Again there is nothing there to indicate he is looking to direct the film but it would be an amazing combination.

The Fault in our Stars is a book that is beloved by teenagers and adults. John Green’s writing is realistic and dares to address issues that most would either shy away from or make sound far too much like a Nicholas Sparks novel. Stephen Chbosky would handle this project with care and be able to keep the realism and witty humor balance to the story.
