While season 6 of The Vampire Diaries has yet to premiere, only two out of the three leads have signed up for season 7. Will season 6 be the last we see of one of them?

According to E! News one of the three main cast members has yet to sign the contract for a seventh season, because this person is “unsure whether he or she wants to continue.” There’s no word on if it’s Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley or Ian Somerhalder, but one thing is clear: If any of them leave it’s going to change the stakes of the show for good. At least two of them have signed on for a seventh season, but what about the third?

With the departure of Damon and Bonnie to some other world, we know that we’re at least going to be seeing them in some form this season. The cast of The Vampire Diaries has been pretty clear in vocalizing that the first half of the sixth season is going to see our favorite vampire gang trying to get Bonnie and Damon back, with the second half likely having them back in Mystic Falls – or more accurately Mystic Falls adjacent since they can’t actually enter their town anymore.

Is Ian Somerhalder the one who’s not signed for season 7? He’s currently heavily involved with his charity foundation, ISF, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he wants to spend more time solely dedicated to it. But what would we do without Damon Salvatore?!

Or for that matter what about Stefan? The Vampire Diaries has always been a show about a love triangle, but Wesley has reiterated time and time again that Stefan is now over Elena. Could it be he’s done playing the nice guy, and he’s adamant to not be part of the love triangle anymore? That would be a sure fire way to get him off the show, even if people are now speculating Stefan will get with Caroline.

The person we’re least worried about is Dobrev – while she’s itching for a career in the movie industry with her new movie Let’s Be Cops currently in theaters and a brief stint in Perks of Being a Wallflower, the series would be a definite no-go without her. Especially since her doppelgangers are gone, we can’t imagine executive producer Julie Plec going forward with the show without their main girl.

The Vampire Diaries could go on without Somerhalder or Wesley, though, so if one of those two doesn’t sign on it’s still a possibility that the CW will want it to continue forward for more than a seventh season. What do you think?

Would you watch ‘The Vampire Diaries’ without Stefan or Damon?
