Who will direct Bond 24? This question has been asked ever since Skyfall director Sam Mendes backed out, and he may not be out after all.

Back in March, Skyfall director Sam Mendes announced that he wouldn’t be back to direct Bond 24, but according to Deadline, it appears that he could be back after all.

Originally, Mendes declined getting back into the Bond series because of his theater – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear – commitments. He felt obligated to do them because he was already committed, but Deadline says that the Bond producers are willing to wait for him to finish those up. If he does come back to direct Bond 24 after he has completed those, production would likely begin in 2014 or 2015.

Sam Mendes isn’t the only director Eon and Sony are looking at, however. According to Variety, the Bond producers have also been considering other directors. Nicolas Winding Refn, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates, and Shane Black are among the candidates being considered, though they may not be all of them. Variety says that it may be a while until a decision is made, and it will almost certainly be until after Daniel Craig’s deal is officially completed. It is believed that Craig will have to approve the studios’ choice.

What do you think? Is there a director you think would be a good fit to direct Bond 24? After the wide success of Skyfall – it scored a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and over $1 billion at the box office – you can officially put us in the camp of those wanting the Bond producers to wait for Sam Mendes to be done with his theater commitments so he can return to the franchise. It’d be nice to have a bit of continuity in the franchise, especially with Bond 24 and Bond 25 being tied together in one arc, the first time this has happened.
