One of the scariest parts about consuming a new Harry Potter story like The Cursed Child is having this thought: Will J.K. Rowling kill any more Harry Potter characters?

Spoiler warning: In this article we are only spoiling which Harry Potter character died before the events of The Cursed Child. We consider this a minor spoiler. We are not spoiling which character(s), if any, die during the play. Read at your own risk!

For some fans, learning that Rowling would publish a sequel (of sorts) to the Harry Potter series was worrisome. The author was returning to the story she had already finished. Things could be changed that we may not want to be changed. And yes, The Cursed Child definitely changes some things. Like the beating heart of a character.

Ready for it?

In Part 1 of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we learn that Petunia Dursley died several years earlier. The reason for her death is not stated, but Harry receives a gift from her, via Dudley, after her passing. The gift, and the Dursleys to some extent, come into play later in The Cursed Child.

Petunia’s death is a bummer. She and Harry never had the chat that he deserved about the dismay she carried for her nephew. Remember, she got close in Deathly Hallows, but never fully went through with it. Thankfully, by that point readers finally understood that Petunia only disliked Harry because he reminded her of Lily.

I was expecting to hear that another character had died in the years between the Battle of Hogwarts and The Cursed Child, but no one else was mentioned. After all, a prominent witch or wizard must’ve passed in the 19 years after Voldemort’s defeat.
