March 2017 gave us two LGBTQ+ characters in major Hollywood movies, but they weren’t really gay.

In Beauty and the Beast, Disney didn’t shy away from making LeFou romantically interested in his pal Gaston before he dances with another man at the very end. In Power Rangers, the Yellow Ranger, played by Becky G, suggests she may be interested in a woman.

These moments are progress in terms of LGBTQ+ representation in major Hollywood movies, but they’re tragically fleeting. LeFou’s “exclusively gay moment” was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot, and the Power Rangers moment only hints that a more prominent LGBT storyline is to come. Oh, and remember Star Trek Beyond‘s gay moment that had been super hyped up? Sulu’s husband appeared very briefly.

So when are we going to get real gay in a major movie? By “real gay,” I mean a movie will go all in on an LGBTQ+ character. Two queer characters will show romantic interest in one another for more than a couple of seconds and maybe even kiss. Or have sex! Or just, you know, proudly show that they love each other! Representation matters, and this is the type of LGBTQ+ character we need to see on screen.

A few guesses as to when it’s gonna get real gay in a major movie:

  1. It’ll be in Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December. We’ve written extensively about Poe Dameron potentially being set up to be Star Wars’ first queer character.
  2. It’ll be in Fantastic Beasts 2 in November 2018. Dumbledore is openly gay and is expected to have a big role in the series going forward. J.K. Rowling owes us after that SCORBUS flop.
  3. It’ll be in another Disney live-action movie. The waters were tested with Beauty and the Beast, and we learned the world could get through a small gay moment in a Disney movie. Disney will get real gay in their live-action Aladdin, Mulan, or maybe another?
  4. Pixar will do it in Toy Story 4. We’ve all identified with one character or another in the world of Toy Story, and as Woody and Buzz head out on a mission to find Bo Peep, they’ll come across a LGBTQ+ character. (Let’s hope the toy resembles a human. We don’t need a queer piggy bank.)
  5. In a Disney Marvel movie, like 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War (come on Marvel, you have a billion heroes to pick from) or Black Panther.
  6. In a Fox Marvel movie. Yes, I’m obviously talking about Deadpool 2. The first Deadpool flipped the superhero genre on its head, and now they have an opportunity to take things further than the anal jokes made in the original.
  7. We’ll have to wait for the next Power Rangers movie, when the Yellow Ranger has more time to be developed.

Now it’s time to place your bets: When do YOU think a studio will get real gay?

Put your guess in the comments and we’ll return to this article once it happens… whenever that may be.
