Good news, Iron Man fans! You’ll get to see (in animated form) and hear Robert Downey Jr. play the MCU’s most beloved billionaire playboy superhero one more time.

Those who have been wondering if Robert Downey Jr. would be reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Disney+’s upcoming Marvel’s What If… had their question answered recently by Thor: Ragnarok star Jeff Goldblum, who recently revealed in an interview with Buzzfeed that the actor would indeed be voicing the animated version of Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr. joins basically everyone else who has ever played an MCU character for the upcoming animated series. At this year’s Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con panel, it was announced that Westworld actor Jeffrey Wright has been cast to voice The Watcher, who serves as the narrator throughout the series.

Joining Jeffrey Wright and Robert Downey Jr. as the voice of the animated counterpart of their live-action character are: Michael B. Jordan, Sebastian Stan, Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Chadwick Boseman, Karen Gillan, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Neal McDonough, Dominic Cooper, Sean Gunn, Natalie Portman, David Dastmalchian, Stanley Tucci, Taika Waititi, Toby Jones, Djimon Hounsou, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Rooker and Chris Sullivan.

Marvel’s What If…? animated series is based on the comic book series from 1977. Over the 200 issue run, the stories explored the different scenarios, ranging from interesting to ludicrous, that posited putting putting major Marvel heroes in alternative universe stories without affecting the pre-existing canon.

With the launch of Disney+, fans were able to see animated snippets of the stories that the show will explore. Those stories include: What If Peggy Carter Took the Super-Soldier Serum? What If Bucky Barnes Fought Zombie Captain America? What if T’Challa became Starlord?

The TV show will explore these comic book stories in a way that would be impossible (both from a production and a budgetary standard) in live-action. Marvel’s What If…? is expected to debut in mid-2021, and will consist of 23 episodes. Like with all Disney+ original shows, episodes will be released weekly rather than all at once.
