The brilliant people at WETA Digital (Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) have posted a fascinating video about the motion capture technology they used in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Unless you saw the midnight premiere last night, you have yet to experience Rise of the Planet of the Apes (which is getting a pretty solid rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and unless you want a part of the film spoiled for you (the apes take over) then we might suggest seeing the movie first.

Back from seeing the movie? Okay perfect, you don’t wanna miss this.

Awesome isn’t it? Having actors on the actual set while utilizing the motion capture technology is new ground, and according to many critics it works very well in the film. Andy Serkis especially has been praised for his work as Ceasar, the films titular chimp.

So what do you think? Is this type of motion capture technology the future of movie-making? Even if Serkis doesn’t get nominated for an acting Oscar, does he deserve one?

Thanks to RopeofSilicon for the video!
