Despite production issues, J.J. Abrams’ star-studded robot-Western drama Westworld is coming to HBO in the fall!

Westworld, the TV remake of the 1973 film by Michael Crichton, has been confirmed for fall 2016.

This is reassuring, considering that the project has been in the works since 2013 and that, as Collider notes, production was halted earlier this year.

Westworld is executively produced by J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub and Bryan Burk, with Jonathan Nolan serving as executive writer/director and Lisa Joy as executive producer and writer. HBO has a 30-second teaser up on its website and it looks amazing:

Westworld: Tease

It boasts a plentiful and impressive cast, led by Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris with Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth and Clifton Collins, Jr. making up the ensemble.

The 10-episode series blends the Western genre with artificial intelligence, set at an adult theme park where a robot malfunction creates terror and havoc for unsuspecting visitors.

Here’s the full description from HBO:

The one-hour drama series WESTWORLD (10 episodes) is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.

HBO has also announced three half-hour comedy series for fall 2016: Divorce starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Awkward Black Girl creator Issa Rae’s Insecure, and High Maintenance, which follows a Brooklyn pot dealer who delivers to clients with neuroses.

There’s no set premiere date for Westworld yet, but we’ll keep you posted. With its A-list cast and promising premise, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
