The weekend has come to a close as tomorrow’s holiday will surely bring in additional money as the summer box office comes to an end with The Possession on top and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure giving us one of the worst opening weekend performances in history.

#1. The Possession

Weekend: $17.7 million
Theaters: 2,816 ($6,286 per theater)
Budget: $14 million
CinemaScore: B
Rotten Tomatoes: 37%
Hypable Grade: N/A

The Possession easily won the weekend to close out the summer with a whimper. With $17.7 million and a respectable $6,286 per theater, Lionsgate will have to be pleased with the performance based on its $14 million budget. That said, the “B” CinemaScore shouldn’t be able to prevent the film from a decent sized drop in the coming weeks.

#2. Lawless

The R-rated prohibition-era crime drama Lawless ended the weekend with $9.8 million for a five-day total of $11.8 million. The “B+” CinemaScore from audiences isn’t quite strong enough to ensure a solid performance in the coming weeks, which is a shame, because John Hillcoat and Nick Cave are a directing and writing duo who deserve attention.

Weekend: $9.8 million | Theaters: 2,888 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#3. The Expendables 2

The Expendables 2 continues to take in sub-40% drops even in its third weekend, as it has now grossed $132 million worldwide.

Did you catch The Expendables 2 yet?

Weekend: $8.8 million (-34.4%) | Theaters: 3,334 | Budget: $100 million | Hypable Grade: A

#4. The Bourne Legacy

The Bourne Legacy took a terrific hit of only 22.4% this weekend, which has added $7 million to its domestic total. Other than that, there isn’t much to report here.

Weekend: $7.2 million (-22.4%) | Theaters: 3,131 | Budget: $125 million | Hypable Grade: B

#5. ParaNorman

Like The Bourne Legacy, ParaNorman also enjoyed a nice 24% drop this weekend, although at this point it doesn’t affect the total too much.

Weekend: $6.5 million (-24.2%) | Theaters: 3,085 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green

The Odd Life of Timothy Green takes the cake here, however, with just a 15% drop. Still, the overall box office performance here isn’t great.

Weekend: $6 million (-15%) | Theaters: 2,635 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#7. The Dark Knight Rises

With the rest of the field underperforming, The Dark Knight Rises refuses to leave the top ten box office performers.

Weekend: $5.8 million (-18.6%)| Theaters: 2,187 | Budget: $250 million | Hypable Grade: A-

#8. The Campaign

Looks like the fictional political comedy The Campaign was able to beat out the fictional (sorry) political documentary 2016 Obama’s America.

Weekend: $5.4 million (-27.1%) | Theaters: 2,941 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: C

#9. 2016 Obama’s America

The anti-Obama documentary 2016 Obama’s America added 659 theaters and dropped 21% in its second semi-wide weekend of release.

Weekend: $5.1 million (-21.6%) | Theaters: 1,750 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#10. Hope Springs

Hope Springs continues to drop small amounts as the power of Meryl Streep (and added theaters) seems to work wonders.

Weekend: $4.7 million (-17.9%) | Theaters: 2,441 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: C+

Both The Avengers and Brave were re-released in theaters for the holiday weekend, as The Avengers crossed the $1.5 billion mark worldwide. The Dark Knight Rises, meanwhile, crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Elsewhere The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure finished the weekend with the worst opening over 1,000 theaters in history. There we have it!
