The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is victorious at the weekend box office yet again, as Killing Them Softly struggled mightily in its opening weekend as the worst Brad Pitt-starring performance in eighteen years.

Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has begun to even out a bit in its box office haul, although it still managed to top the weekend once again with $17.4 million, narrowly beating out Skyfall. That’s three consecutive weekends atop the box office, which hasn’t happened since The Possession managed it back in August.

Speaking of Skyfall, the James Bond film managed to take in a cool $17 million to take second place, but more importantly it has now become the highest grossing spy film ever in terms of domestic profit, taking over The Bourne Ultimatum to top the genre. The film is eyeing another milestone, a billion dollars worldwide, although that mark isn’t yet guaranteed.

In third place is Lincoln, which took in $13.5 million and continues to impress as it nears $100 million domestically. Also of note is Silver Linings Playbook, which was just edged out of the top ten with $3.3 million, but led limited releases in terms of per screen averages. Taking its spot at #10 was the newcomer The Collection, which took in $3.4 million from 1,403 theaters.

We now come to Killing Them Softly, which hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in its opening weekend at 2,000 theaters. Grossing just $7 million, the film takes the prize of being the worst opening for a Brad Pitt film in nearly eighteen years. On top of this, audiences awarded the film with a nearly unheard of “F” CinemaScore, proving the gap between critics and audiences is, in fact, as wide as some may have suspected.

Next weekend will see Playing for Keeps hitting wide release as cinema-houses prepare for a return to Middle Earth the following week.
