The Expendables 2 spent its second straight weekend atop the domestic box office, as this weekend’s overall performance was one of the worst in recent memory.

#1. The Expendables 2

Weekend: $13.5 million (-52.8%)
Theaters: 3,355
Budget: $100 million
CinemaScore: A-
Rotten Tomatoes: 67%
Hypable Grade: A

The Expendables 2 managed to stay atop the box office for another weekend, despite its 50%-plus drop with a bolstered theater count. While it can boast being “The #1 Movie in America!” for a second straight weekend, the overall box office performance has been truly terrible for the entire field of wide releases, so this shouldn’t be much to brag about.

On the bright side, the film has now topped the $50 million mark domestically in just its second weekend, so there’s a possibility we’ll see another one of these. Otherwise, the weakest weekend at the box office in 2012 has arrived, as for the first time audiences failed to send the overall box office grosses over the $100 million mark. Summer, it seems, has come to an end.

Did you manage to see The Expendables 2 yet?

#2. The Bourne Legacy

The Bourne Legacy took a smaller hit this weekend, dropping a respectable 45% in its third weekend. It’s now also topped the $100 million mark worldwide, but that $125 million budget still looms large.

Weekend: $9.3 million (-45.5%)| Theaters: 3,654 | Budget: $125 million | Hypable Grade: B

#3. ParaNorman

ParaNorman took a nice sub-40% hit its second weekend, although its opening was low enough where it doesn’t really make much of a difference at this point. We’ll just have to wait and see on that production budget to know exactly where the film stands.

Did you see ParaNorman yet? What did you think?

Weekend: $8.5 million (-39.3%) | Theaters: 3,455 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#4. The Campaign

The Campaign has managed to stay in the top five another weekend, as no newcomers were able to give the film a bump out of that slot. In fact, the top four this weekend is identical to last weekend’s, which can’t happen that often.

Weekend: $7.4 million (-43.3%) | Theaters: 3,302 | Budget: $56 million | Hypable Grade: C

#5. The Dark Knight Rises

The big news here is that The Dark Knight Rises is now nearing top ten all-time domestically. Warner Bros. has got to be thrilled with that fact.

Weekend: $7.1 million (-35.1%) | Theaters: 2,244 | Budget: $250 million | Hypable Grade: A-

#6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green

That 34% hit from The Odd Life of Timothy Green is great. The $27 million in earnings so far is not.

Weekend: $7.1 million (-34.2%) | Theaters: 2,598 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#7. Premium Rush

Finally, we have a newcomer, as the Joseph Gordon-Levitt starrer Premium Rush drastically underperformed, taking in just $6.3 million for a $2,700 per theater average. Not great at all.

Weekend: $6.3 million | Theaters: 2,255 | Budget: $35 | Hypable Grade: N/A

#8. 2016 Obama’s America

Not quite sure what to say about this one. An anti-Obama documentary has cracked the top ten after adding 900 theaters. Lest we get political in a movie column, I’ll just say that from a financial standpoint this is a good performance.

Weekend: $6.2 million (+401.2%) | Theaters: 1,091 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: N/A

#9. Hope Springs

Hope Springs continues to suffer minor drops and add to that bottom line, as Meryl Streep once again proves her films have endurance.

Weekend: $6 million (-34.1%) | Theaters: 2,402 | Budget: N/A | Hypable Grade: C+

#10. Hit and Run

Hit and Run can’t be pleased about opening to just $4.6 million, but that $2 million production budget makes it better.

Weekend: $4.6 million | Theaters: 2,870 | Budget: $2 million | Hypable Grade: N/A

There you have it. Next week we have the Lawless and The Possession in wide release Do you see either of these topping the box office?
