Warner Bros’ Wonka has found its titular candy man in Timothee Chalamet.

According to Deadline, Academy Award nominee Timothee Chalamet has officially been cast as Willy Wonka in a brand new movie set to tell the character’s origin story.

Specific plot details for Wonka are being kept shrouded in secrecy for the time being, though rumors hint that the movie might incorporate some musical numbers. One thing we do know is that the movie is set to pick up with the titular character when he’s much younger and has yet to open his fantastical chocolate factory.

Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory offers up some sparse details about the candy man’s life prior to gaining notoriety for his confectionaries.

In addition, Tim Burton’s 2005 remake further expanded on Wonka’s origin story by creating a backstory for the character that involved his father being a dentist who despised sweets. There’s no telling if Warner Bros,’ Wonka will include any of those details, but it’ll be interesting to see if they do or not.

Behind the camera, the origin story movie is being directed by Paddington vet Paul King, and features a script King co-wrote with Simon Farnaby.

Currently, there’s no word on who else might join Timothee Chalamet for Wonka, but now that the movie has found its leading man, we’re sure it’s only time before it rounds out the rest of its cast.

Warner Bros’ Wonka is set to hit theaters next year on March 17, 2023.
