Just weeks after Ben Affleck stepped out of the director’s chair, WB has found its new director for The Batman.

The new movie, still starring Ben Affleck — who reportedly wants out of the Justice League* — will be directed and produced by Matt Reeves. The filmmaker helmed this year’s War for the Planet of the Apes as well as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield.

“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen,” said Reeves.

Added WB head Toby Emmerich, “We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”

The solo Batman movie doesn’t have a release date. Next up on WB’s DC slate are Wonder Woman and Justice League, both hitting theaters later this year.

*Interestingly, there’s no mention of Ben Affleck in the press release. The lack of his name appearing is very suspicious when you remember the rumors that the actor may want to leave the DC world (see link above).
