The next day, Ethan finds Beverly’s corpse hanging from the ceiling of the dilapidated house. He takes her body down and promises to find her daughter. He covers her body with a blanket.

Following the trail

Ethan heads to Beverly’s house. It’s been completely emptied out, and Ethan hides when a realtor and two cleaners enter. The realtor sends the cleaners away and lets Ethan leave silently. As Ethan is leaving, he sees a food truck from Wyoming drive by.

At the Boise Secret Service, Theresa tries to get some information from a secretary, who agrees to look into whether a formal inquiry was made. When she gets up, Theresa logs into Ethan’s account and finds his most recent transactions. In Seattle, Hassler warns Wayward Pines.

At the gas station Ethan and his partner last stopped at, a couple of kids tell Theresa and Ethan about the accident, so they head out. Nine miles outside of Wayward Pines, they’re pulled over by Pope, who fakes an oil leak. He offers to look under the hood, and cuts a line.

The mystery deepens

In Wayward Pines, Ethan stows away in the food truck in the hope of getting out of town. When the truck stops, Ethan exits the back door and finds himself in a mysterious hangar.

In the hangar, Ethan recognizes an abandoned car as Theresa’s. He climbs into the back seat and finds a broken guitar and a bag labeled as Theresa’s personal effects. The back window suddenly breaks and Pope injects Ethan with a sedative. Ethan fights back and demands to know about his family, but Pope just laughs as Ethan stumbles and passes out.

Family reunion

Ethan wakes up to a phone ringing, and the voice on the other end says his family was just discharged from the hospital. Ethan walks out of his room and demands where they are. Nurse Pam says they’re at home — a house opened up the night before.

Beverly’s old house has been filled with furniture and food, and Ethan finds Theresa and Ben there. Ben has a cast on his hand; the hospital told them they were in an accident. They only remember driving and waking up in the hospital. A realtor picked them up and brought them to the house.

The realtor from earlier walks in, saying Theresa and Ben are situated. He reminds Ethan that the house has a state-of-the-art security system.

Theresa tells Ethan about Pope pulling them over, and the phone starts ringing. Ethan pulls the phone from the wall. Meanwhile, Ben is called by name by a kid riding by. Ethan asks Theresa not to leave the house or speak to anyone.

An extraordinary town

At the sheriff’s office, Ethan warns Pope to stay away from his family. Nurse Pam says they just want him to have a happy life in Wayward Pines, so Ethan brings up what’s off about the town. Pam calls Wayward Pines an extraordinary town.

Pope tells Ethan he and his family will be safer if they follow the rules. The phone rings and Pam answers. Ethan realizes neither Pope nor Pam are in charge, so leaves.

At the house, Ben knows that things are off. Meanwhile, Ethan runs into Jenkins, who says Wayward Pines needs someone like him, but Ethan says he doesn’t live there. The mailbox, however, now has the Burke name on it.

Shaking things up

Ben watches Ethan head into the trees behind the house and follows. Later, Theresa realizes he’s gone but before she can look for him, she finds Pope in the kitchen, helping himself to ice cream. He says he saved them from the accident and demands a thank you. He says he’s losing his patience with the Burkes. Theresa tells him to leave, and he warns her to remember that this is his town.

The woods are free of surveillance, so Ethan tells Kate his family is there. She didn’t know, but she thinks he should tell them about her. Kate says she hadn’t seen Evans in a decade then, two years earlier, he was suddenly there without having aged. Kate’s tried everything, including running, but the only way to stay alive is to play along. Ethan encourages her to fight back.

Ben comes home and tells Theresa he saw Ethan with Kate.

You can’t handle the truth

At the house, Ethan finds the door open and Theresa’s ring in the hallway. As Theresa and Ben walk out of town, a truck comes up behind them — it’s Pope. They’re pursued to the wall. Ben attacks Pope, who draws his gun then puts Ben in the truck.

Ethan appears and attacks Pope. As Pope grabs his gun, the truck runs him over — Ben’s behind the wheel. Theresa gets in and Ethan grabs the gun. Pope says the truth is worse than anything Ethan could imagine. Ethan shoots him and takes his keys.

One opens a door in the wall. Something comes out and takes Pope’s body. There are horrible noises, and the Burkes flee.
