Secret Service agent Ethan Burke and his partner were in a brutal car accident that killed Ethan’s partner and wounded Ethan. Stumbling through the woods, Ethan found himself in Wayward Pines, Idaho. However, he would soon discover that not all is as it seems — from Nurse Pam, whose cheerful exterior matches a cruel attitude toward her patients, to the inhospitable Sheriff Pope, no one seems to be happy to see Ethan.
No one except bartender Beverly, that is, who rescued Ethan from the hospital and informed him that “they” are trying to break his mind. She also revealed that she arrived in 1999, though believed she’d been in Wayward Pines for less than a year. Meanwhile, Ethan discovered the mutilated remains of one of two missing Secret Service agents. Ethan found the other agent, Kate, alive and well — and 12 years older despite Ethan having seen her five weeks earlier.
Ethan, unable to get a phone line out of Wayward Pines, tried to flee. After finding his car driving in circles when he tried to cross the line, Ethan tried to escape through the woods only to discover a huge, electrified wall spanning the entire town.
