Watchmen premiered on HBO, and though the show hasn’t gotten Game of Thrones numbers (yet), it was a huge ratings success for HBO.

The series premiere of Watchmen has been hotly anticipated by fans of the iconic Alan Moore graphic novel. And in addition to pulling largely positive reviews from fans and critics alike, it was one of the strongest series premieres on HBO in quite some time.

According to Variety, the series premiere pulled in 1.5 million viewers. For comparison with another big, new HBO show, Variety reports this premiere pulled in 20% more viewers than the Succession season finale and beat the show’s series premiere, which pulled in 1.2 million viewers.

Obviously, Watchmen is still well below Game of Thrones numbers. The show’s eighth season pulled in a shocking 17.4 million viewers, but if the vigilante drama keeps going, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it beat those numbers one day.

However, Watchmen’s premiere marks the “strongest debut performance” for the network across its digital platforms since Westworld premiered in 2016. And while Westworld is still pulling in higher numbers than Watchmen for now, we won’t be surprised if it doesn’t take long for the superhero saga to pull in higher numbers than Westworld.

So if you’re unfamiliar with Watchmen and you didn’t check out the new show, now is the time to jump on board. Watchmen is set in an alternate timeline where superhero vigilantes are seen as outlaws rather than heroes.

The show follows Angela Abar, played by the brilliant Regina King, who is the lead detective in the Tulsa Police Force and the mother of three children. Watchmen comes to us from showrunner Damon Lindelof and is set after the events of Moore’s graphic novel.

Watchmen has been lauded for paying homage to Moore’s original work while also telling a fresh story. Additionally, as a show with a Black woman leading the story and highlighting often-ignored real moments from history, like the Tulsa Race Massacre, Watchmen is giving voice to individuals and stories that are often ignored in pop culture.

It will certainly be exciting to see how Watchmen’s viewership grows with such a groundbreaking show.

Watchmen airs Sunday nights on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Now and HBO Go.
