The newest trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story finds star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria taking center stage.

Director Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated remake of West Side Story is just a few months out of leaping onto the silver screen. But Walt Disney has a nice surprise for musical theater fans who just can’t wait to get a taste of what’s in store.

On Wednesday (September 15), the studio released an all new trailer for the movie, that builds up the tension that follows after that fated night when Maria and Tony first meet.

The new trailer for West Side Story also offers up a fantastic glimpse of newcomer Rachel Zegler’s take on the musical’s iconic number “Tonight,” which plays over the course of the trailer.

Adapted from the 1957 Broadway musical for the screen by Tony Winner Tony Kushner, West Side Story is set in the late 1950s in New York City, and tells the tale of star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria.

The highly anticipated movie musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); and Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke).

Also on board is EGOT winner Rita Moreno, who scored an Oscar win for her portrayal of Anita in the original big screen adaptation of the musical. This time around, she’ll be taking on the role of a new character named Valentinam who owns the corner store in which Tony works.

West Side Story hits theaters on December 10, 2021.
