The first Game of Thrones season 8 teaser sets fire against ice.

In the first new piece of promotional material for the hotly-anticipated final season, Game of Thrones has released an evocative teaser previewing the war to come. Sides are chosen, Houses consumed, and it’s clear that it’s not just winter that has come to Westeros.

The Game of Thrones season 8 teaser arranges itself as a conflict between the forces of fire and ice. This isn’t surprising, as the HBO series is based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, but there is clearly more than one implication of this preview.

On the one hand, there is dramatic visualization of the fact that fire — presumably Daenerys’ dragon fire — must fight the icy forces of the White Walkers. But the teaser also clearly aligns the Wolf and Dragon (Houses Stark and Targaryen) — with ice, and the Lion (House Lannistetr) with fire.

Which war takes precedence? Will fire or ice prevail, and will that mean life or death for Westeros and beyond?

The Game of Thrones season 8 teaser doesn’t contain any new footage from the epic conclusion, but there is plenty to digest here before the series makes its final stand next year.
