An extended trailer for Game of Thrones season 4 has just aired on HBO, previewing the heart-pounding events to come.

As reported late last week, the first official trailer for Game of Thrones season 4 has just aired on HBO.

The full-sized, action-packed trailer gives fans of the epic fantasy series a long-awaited look at the battles, intrigues, and unexpected twists that await them in the show’s fourth season. The trailer for Game of Thrones season 4 opens with a dragon’s shadow falling across the city of Meereen, and moves on to something even scarier: King Joffery, demanding to his dad uncle Jaime that he won the War of the Five Kings. Scenes of carnage flash before our eyes as Jaime responds, “The war’s not over.”

Ser Jorah Mormont then takes over the narration. “It’s tempting to see your enemies as evil,” he says, as flashes of Stannis, Melisandre, Davos, and Tyrion appear. “But there is good and evil on both sides, in every war ever fought.” Over his words, a terrified man is stabbed to death in an alley. Daenerys, seen briefly on her new Meereenese throne, emphasizes the point when she says that men can either live in her new world, or die in their old one.

(Epic.)

From there, the trailer moves on to Tyrion Lannister, who walks through the throne room of the Red Keep with shackles on his hands. In a jail cell, he remarks that he doesn’t think he’ll be “talking his way out of this one.” Briefly, a man in a bright yellow coat gazes at the empty Iron Throne. And then it’s on to Jon Snow. As Ygritte and other wildings wreak havoc on the landscape, Jon warns the black brothers that the wildlings “will roll over everything and everyone” should they breach the Wall.

Brief clips follow of Yara Greyjoy sailing in a longboat, Jaime being painfully fitted with a false hand, a tear falling down Cersei’s cheek, and an infant boy being left naked in the snow. “Given the opportunity,” Littlefinger muses, “what do we do to those who hurt the ones we love?”

The man in the yellow coat – Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne – instructs Tyrion to tell Tywin that he has arrived. “And tell him,” he says, “that Lannisters are not the only ones who pay their debts.” In a brief, and unbelievably cool shot, the man flips in the air to evade a sword-strike during a vicious duel.

“You’ll fight over him like beasts until you tear him apart,” Cersei cries to Tywin, over shots of Joffery and Margaery’s long-anticipated wedding. “I will burn our House to the ground before I let that happen!”

Jaime slams a massive book closed; Alliser Thorne cries out that the black brothers will fight. Swords descend on bound men, and Melisandre intones, “There is only one hell – the one we live in now.” A supine Theon is slapped in bed, a girl in a dark cape enters a courtyard full of snow, Arya whirls with her sword, and Daenerys looks down, satisfied, at crowds cheering her presence.

“If you want justice,” Tyrion finally murmurs, tears and darkness in his eyes, “You’ve come to the wrong place.”

Like we said: Epic.

Game of Thrones season 4 will cover the second half of the third book in Martin’s opus, A Storm of Swords. HBO recently announced that Game of Thrones season 4 will premiere on Sunday, April 6 at its established time of 9:00 p.m. ET.
