Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman is exploring new ground in the new British horror flick, Ghost Stories, and this recently released clip gives us a taste of the scares headed our way.

Martin Freeman has played many an iconic role, from his work on the U.K. show The Office as Tim to his more recent work as Dr. Watson on Sherlock. In his latest role, he’s trying something a bit different. For the film Ghost Stories, Freeman plays a man named Mike visited by what he believes to be the poltergeist of an unborn child.

The film centers around Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman) and his investigation into three cases (including Mike’s) of the paranormal to debunk them. However, the more he investigates, the more he realizes that all three cases seem to have a dark connection to the Professor’s own life. In this clip originally released by Entertainment Weekly, we get a bit of a taste of that.

It’s not clear what the connection between the three cases Professor Goodman is investigating and his own life, but the dark figure in this clip makes it pretty obvious that something (or someone) is connecting all of them. Of course, with Mike’s attitude during the clip, we’ve got to wonder if Martin Freeman isn’t just playing a character who is sharing his brush with the paranormal with a curious professor, or if there is something more sinister to Mike.

Ghost Stories looks like it is going to be a brilliant piece of British horror cinema. From the looks of this clip and the trailer, this movie is going to be an intense journey into the supernatural, and we can’t wait. The film releases in theaters and VOD on April 20, and stars Paul Whitehouse (Alice in Wonderland) and Alex Lawther (The End of the F***ing World) alongside of Freeman and Nyman.
