Bad news, Akira fans. Reports say that Warner Bros. is putting their big-screen adaptation of Akira on hold until further notice.

The big-screen adaptation of Akira has spent years trying to get off the ground, but it seems that it’s encountered yet another roadblock and is being put on hold indefinitely at Warner. With director Taika Waititi signing on to Thor 4, it seems a scheduling conflict was caused, and Warner Bros. is holding off on bringing Akira to life.

According to reports from Variety, things were pretty far along with the adaptation. Waititi was meeting with Japanese actors for the lead roles in the film, and it even had a release date set of May 21, 2021. It is expected to be removed from Warner Bros.’s release schedule.

While Variety reports that Warner Bros. was surprised to hear Waititi signed on for the fourth Thor flick with Akira’s production start date right around the corner, they are hoping he’ll join back in with the film once Thor wraps. Waititi said in 2018 that he planned to adapt the film based around the actual manga series rather than the animated film from 1988, and fans were incredibly excited about the possibilities that could bring paired with Waititi’s creative directorial eye.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a director departed this project. Back in 2012, Jaume Collet-Serra was set to direct the film, but he ultimately dropped out to focus on other projects after several delays in the project thanks to budgetary concerns from Warner.

Delays also came once Waititi signed on. The studio pushed back release dates reportedly to give Waititi more time to find just the right people for the film, but his exit from the film has raised questions about other creative differences halting progress.

Waititi hasn’t yet spoken about his departure from Akira, but we can’t blame him for eagerly signing on to Thor 4. Working for Marvel is a huge achievement, and his work on Ragnarok revitalized the Thor franchise. Plus, the professional chemistry he had with Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson made his addition to the Thor team seem like a match made in heaven.

We’ll have to wait to see if Waititi rejoins Akira after Thor 4 wraps, or if the film will find another director who can helm this troubled, big-screen adaptation.
