A Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel titled Wonka is officially on the horizon over at Warner Brothers.

According to Variety, Warner Brothers has set a tentative release date for its Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel, Wonka, with plans to premiere the film in theaters on March 17, 2023.

Though today’s tentative release date is new news, word of the prequel’s existence is not. In fact, the project has been gestating over at Warner Brothers for the past few years, and the studio already has some big names attached behind the scenes.

Harry Potter and Paddington producer David Heyman is on board to serve as a producer on Wonka. Meanwhile, Simon Rich, who has been attached to the prequel since 2016 is set to write the script.

Rich’s most recent credits include writing credits on Saturday Night Live, as well as adapting the screenplay for Seth Rogen’s An American Pickle, which is based off of Rich’s own New Yorker short story.

Finally, Heyman will be re-teaming with fellow Paddington vet Paul King, who is on board to serve as director on Wonka.

Still shrouded in secrecy is what the plot of Wonka will revolve around. One thing we do know is that the movie intends to focus on the candy man’s life prior to gaining fame and notoriety for the sweets produced in his mysteriously fantastical factory.

Also unknown is who might take on the role of Willy Wonka himself— a character whose previously been played by Gene Wilder in the movie musical, as well as Johnny Depp in the Tim Burton helmed 2005 reboot.

WB’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel, Wonka, hits theaters on March 17, 2023.
