Reports are in that Ben Affleck may be in the running to direct and possibly co-star in a Justice League film set to hit theaters in 2015.

During The Dark Knight Rises‘ press rounds, we found out that director Christopher Nolan turned down offers from WB to direct a Justice League film and now it looks like they’ve turned towards another director they’ve had success with before – Ben Affleck.

You may remember the highly successful film that Affleck starred and directed in for Warner Bros. – The Town. It seems they’re confident enough with him to even send him the Justice League script that Gangster Squad writer Will Beall wrote last summer. We have to imagine not many people are being shown this script, so it’s a fairly big sign that Affleck is definitely being considered.

Oddly enough, Affleck has made it clear from his past films that he only wishes to direct films that he is also starring in. According to Variety, Affleck’s representatives declined to comment on whether he would co-star in the film or even be involved at all. Deadline even went on to say they’ve already confirmed with Affleck’s people and he’s reportedly “passed” on directing. But, knowing that Variety and Deadline have what we’d call…a friendly rivalry…makes it difficult to know who to believe as of now. Deadline does note that Warner Bros. is interested in Affleck directing the film though.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Justice League, it’s essentially The Avengers for DC Comic heroes. The League includes Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash and Wonder Woman.

Most likely all of these characters will be recast, with possibly Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) being the only actor to have a solo-film linked to his name before the Justice League hits theaters in 2015. This also means recasting Batman within just a few years of Christian Bale’s trilogy, which will be a daunting task to say the least.

Affleck has proven to be quite the capable director in the last few years (even more so than his acting abilities), but he will be in the same seat as directors John Favreau (Iron Man) and Kenneth Branagh (Thor) if he gets his hands on a film this size, with such franchise potential.

Despite the recent failures in the DC Comics world, such as Green Lantern and Superman Returns, The Dark Knight franchise has proven that DC heroes can bring the masses to theaters. Man of Steel is DC’s next big film, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, this gritty Superman film may be the perfect segue into what looks to be a great time to finally get The Justice League together.

With the right director, script, and cast – The Justice League has enough fan-favorite characters that it could battle even The Avengers for our collective-comic hearts. Though, even suggesting such an impossible task seems difficult after director Joss Whedon signed on to direct The Avengers 2 just yesterday.

Are you ready for a Justice League film? Think Ben Affleck is up for the monumental task?
