Not to be outdone by Lionsgate, Sony and Disney, Warner Bros. is now also working on a Robin Hood film.

That means a total of four (!) different movies based on the Robin Hood saga are currently in development.

The latest contender for the crown (or, since we’re talking about Robin Hood, the chance to dine with Lady Marian) is Warner Bros.

Deadline reports that Dan Lin (producer of the Sherlock Holmes trilogy and The Lego Movie) and Will Beall (Aquaman writer) are working on a treatment for a new movie based on the age-old story.

We still think the Sherwood saga peaked with this foxy fella, but whatever:

Meanwhile, Lionsgate is developing Robin Hood: Origins, which is written by Joby Harold (who’s also set to pen the upcoming King Arthur series) while Sony has Hood on the table.

Finally, Disney’s take is (unfortunately?) not a live-action remake of their Animal Farm-esque 1973 animation, but rather a “swashbuckling family friendly adventure” titled Nottingham & Hood.

Now, what in the world has possessed Hollywood to start spewing out Robin Hood scripts? Of all well-known stories to return to, Robin Hood seems like one of the most overdone, between 16 movies (in the English language) and five television series based on the iconic figure.

Well, for starters, it isn’t likely that all of these will get made. Although the ancient British folklore tale is not copyrighted, studios usually try to avoid being in direct competition with each other.

But with the growing popularity of Cinematic Universes and the demand for repeated stories (see Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast…), there’s plenty of room for them all.

Who knows? Maybe they could even join forces and launch the Sherwood Cinematic Universe!
