Upon the tragic shootings in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning, Warner Bros. pulled the Gangster Squad trailer that played before The Dark Knight Rises.  Now, a source is saying that Warner Bros. is cutting an entire scene from Gangster Squad that eerily mimics the appalling events.

After doing “crisis-management” and pulling the Gangster Squad trailer, Warner Bros. has also cancelled many publicity events for The Dark Knight Rises, including cancelling the Paris premiere.  Now, First Showing via Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is re-cutting the entire film, most notably removing an entire scene altogether.  The scene, as shown in the trailer, involves Sean Penn as a mobster with his fellow gangsters going into the Grumman’s Chinese Theater and shooting at the audience. Clearly, feelings towards this scene have now changed, and Variety is reporting from an inside source that this entire scene will be cut:

“The studio moved swiftly Friday to pull from exhibs and online outlets the trailer for Gangster Squad, a period drama that featured a scene in which agents spray machine-gun fire into a crowded movie theater from behind the screen. Given the eerie association created by the Aurora shootings, Warner Bros. has since decided to remove the scene from the film, which opens Sept. 7, and is putting reshoot plans into motion, a source with knowledge of the situation told Variety. Warner Bros. would not comment.”

First Showing also mentions that it’s very possible Gangster Squad would receive a delayed release, considering the film is due out in six weeks.

What are your thoughts on reshooting and recutting parts of Gangster Squad?
