Actress Gal Gadot will star in Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman movie in 2017, and now there are reports that WB are looking for a female director to helm the film.

It was recently revealed that Wonder Woman’s solo film will be hitting theaters in 2017, the same year that Justice League will be released. Now THR reports that WB are looking to hire a female director for Wonder Woman.

This would be the first female director to helm a superhero film, so it’s significant that the studio is looking to make an effort to break up the boys club.

While Wonder Woman won’t be the first female superhero film to hit the big screen, she’ll certainly be the biggest since comic book movies became a billion dollar industry after Iron Man reignited the superhero boom in 2008.

Having a female director take the reigns of Wonder Woman is exciting, and it shows Warner Bros. is thinking outside the box and looking at making some changes in the superhero movie game.

There aren’t any names on the director list yet, but there are certainly some very capable ones who have directed some incredible films recently. Like Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow, who recently directed Zero Dark Thirty, and Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first Twilight film which sparked a phenomenon.

Marvel had all but started filming Thor: The Dark World with Patty Jenkins, but Jenkins and Marvel couldn’t iron out the details and instead went with Game of Thrones’ director Alan Taylor.

Marvel still haven’t signed a female director for any of their superhero films, which is fairly surprising considering they’ve been in the superhero genre for a decade now.

Forbes reports that they’ve heard TV directors Tricia Brock (The Walking Dead) and Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones) are at the top of the list for Wonder Woman, which actually sounds great considering the quality of writing and directing we’ve seen on TV shows lately.

With the film coming out in three years, we should be hearing an official announcement soon. Warner Bros. have a lot of directors to hire for their 10 superhero films over the next six years, and we’re excited to find out which direction they plan to go with Wonder Woman.

Which female director would you like to see helming 2017’s solo Wonder Woman movie?
