Walt Disney Studios, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar at D23 Expo 2019 Recap

Disney kicked off the D23 weekend with a Disney+ panel, introducing new looks at their upcoming streaming service, Disney+.

On Saturday, Disney showed us what they have in stores for theaters (remember those old things?), and it all looks so exciting. You can check out our minute-by-minute live blog coverage of the panel, below.

The panel started with one of the studio’s biggest franchises: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They showed a trailer that featured Rey with a dual bladed light saber! The trailer hasn’t shown up online yet, but they did release this cool new poster for the movie.

Then, Marvel’s Kevin Feige took the stage to talk about Black Panther 2, which will be directed by Ryan Coogler. They showed a trailer that unfortunately probably won’t be released online for a while, but the movie will be released on May 6, 2022.

Following their appearance at SDCC, the cast of The Eternals made their second group appearance at the D23 panel. This time, they were joined by Kit Harrington, who will play Dane Whitman, and Gemma Chan, who will play Sersi.

In one of the most exciting moments of the panel, Disney showed the first footage from Black Widow, along with a video of Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour and Florence Pugh. The footage showed Natasha fighting her sister, Yelena (Florence Pugh), in Budapest, where the movie is set!

Next was Disney’s live action slate with executive Sean Bailey. “We’ve gone all the way to the back side of water in Jungle Cruise,” he said. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson then entered in a jungle cruise boat. He’ll be playing Frank, the boat captain. He also introduced some footage from the movie.

Next up, Angelina Jolie made her second appearance (the first being The Eternals) for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. “In the sequel, differences are being pointed out and it’s about the idea of family and what defines family,” she said. Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, and Chiwetel Ejiofor then joined the panel.

Ejiofor will be playing Maleficent’s dark fae brother. They released a clip that shows a very head-on confrontation between The Queen and Maleficent. The sequel will show a war between the humans and the fae.

Mulan brought Niki Caro to release some new, gorgeous footage from the movie. Cruella brought Emma Stone and Emma Thompson to tell the audience that the movie will be set in 1970s London and will explore “what made Cruella Cruella.” It’s coming May 28, 2021. Check out this image from Disney:

Next up: Pixar! Pete Doctor, the new CEO of Pixar, showed up to tell us what’s to come. He was here to talk about two new original films, Onward and Soul.

Soul will ask, “Why am I here?” and will star Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, Jamie Fox and Tina Fey.

Onward will star Chris Pratt and Tom Holland. The movie takes place in a “modern fantasy world,” and you can watch the trailer here:

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland showed up to talk about the movie. They announced that Julia Luis-Dreyfus will be playing their mother, and then introduced eight minutes of footage from the movie!

Last was Walt Disney Animation Studios. CEO Jennifer Lee led this portion of the panel.

First up was Raya and the Last Dragon, a newly announced film which is “inspired by the cultures of East Asia and the creatures that have been traveling the area and gathering ideas.” Adele Lim will be writing the film. The tagline for the film is “Keep the Light Alive” and it will be out November 2020. They also showed some beautiful footage.

Then, Chris Buck came out to talk about Frozen II. The movie will answer how Elsa got her powers, and where their parents were really going. We’ll even see their parents, and their mother will be voiced by Evan Rachel Wood. Sterling K Brown will also be joining as Lieutenant Mattias. The first scene in the film will be Evan Rachel Wood’s character singing to her daughters.

The event closed out with the original cast coming out for an original performance! Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad sang a cool new song from Frozen II titled “Some Things Never Change.”
