Big Hero 6 soared into theaters last weekend and made an impressive $56 million in its first three days.

Now, what’s next from WDAS?

We all love Disney and the stories they tell, so since everyone is interested in their upcoming slate, we thought we’d take a deeper look at their forthcoming projects.

Although the studio has released a new film every year since 2006, Walt Disney Animation will be skipping 2015.

The most likely reason for the break is so that their brothers at Pixar can unveil not one, but two projects. The first will be Pete Docter’s Inside Out in June. In November the studio will release Peter Sohn and Bob Peterson’s The Good Dinosaur. Both, as you may be able to surmise from the titles, are original stories.

In 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios will hop back in the saddle with two films. This’ll be the first time since 2002 (with Lilo & Stich and Treasure Planet) that Disney Animation releases a pair of films in a calendar year.

‘Zootopia’

The first is Zootopia which is set for release March 4, 2016. Little has been shared about the movie, but we know that the project is under the direction of Byron Howard (co director of Bolt and Tangled). This film sounds like a potential Madagascar-type franchise for Disney if only because it’s a story about a world made up of only animals. It won’t be too much like Dreamworks’ animal franchise, however; the director said in an interview last year it’ll be different from other animal anthropomorphic films.

The synopsis reads, “In the animal city of Zootopia, a fast-talking fox who’s trying to make it big goes on the run when he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Zootopia’s top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they’re forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.”

The film will be directed by Byron Howard, who co-directed previous Disney hits Bolt and Tangled.

‘Moana’

The second film is Moana which will open November 23, 2016. Unlike Zootopia which was unveiled last summer, this project was only announced in October.

Moana is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the same co-directing team behind Disney classics The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and The Princess and the Frog. With a resume made up of those films, how could a film like this be anything less than fantastic?

Here’s the synopsis: “In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.”

While the film will be CG, there’s at least one report which suggests the film will take on a “painterly” type of animation style. If true, this may give it a hand-drawn look and win over viewers who’ve been yearning for Disney to return to old form. Sure, it won’t be true 2D animation, but at least it’ll be different!

What’s beyond 2016? So far Disney hasn’t made any official announcements, but there is a film based on the classic fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk currently in development titled Giants.

One thing that’s notably absent: Sequels. With Pixar recently producing a slew of sequels (and even one prequel), one would’ve expected Walt Disney Animation to do the same. One potential film that could be easily sequel-ized is Wreck-It Ralph. In fact, the director told Hypable last year they were kicking around the idea.

And yet, Disney has stayed away from theatrical sequels for years and years. Interesting, isn’t it?

Needless to say, Walt Disney Animation is in a great period of filmmaking right now and we can’t wait to learn more about what’s next.
