AMC is planning a one-off Walking Dead special depicting a zombie attack on an airplane, and a character who survives the attack will join Fear the Walking Dead season 2.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the 30-minute special will premiere online then air in pieces during commercial breaks of The Walking Dead. In their words, the special “will tell a stand-alone story following a group of passengers facing a walker attack on an airline while in flight.”

In our opinion this idea is brilliant. Not only will it encourage people to pay attention during the commercial breaks, but it’ll also help AMC promote Fear the Walking Dead during its off-season. Presumably the people who watch this standalone special will want to see how the new character joins Fear when season 2 airs next year.

As far as terrifying ideas go, a zombie attack on a plane is certainly one of the most frightening. If a zombie is coming after you on the ground you can try to out run them. On a plane? You have nowhere to go. You’re trapped. All you can do is hope that the walker doesn’t break into the cockpit.

We doubt anyone who’s already afraid of flying will want to tune in for this.

Fear the Walking Dead is set at the very start of the apocalypse, so presumably this attack on board a plane will occur around the same time as the events taking place in Fear season 1. The first season only has 6 episodes, so AMC can get away with airing this special during The Walking Dead later this year or early next without having to jump too far backwards in Fear’s timeline.

Fear the Walking Dead premiered to stellar ratings last Sunday — 10.1 million people tuned in for episode 1, making it the biggest series premiere in cable history. Episode 2 airs this Sunday at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC.

It’ll be interesting to see how the ratings change as the remaining 5 episodes air on AMC. Did viewers enjoy the premiere enough to continue watching? Did it receive such great word of mouth that the ratings will grow?

This special episode set on an airplane makes one thing clear: AMC has no plans to stop growing the world of The Walking Dead.
