The Walking Dead TV universe is expanding once again with a third series about life in the zombie apocalypse.

Right now, the only details about the new show is that it will be a coming of age story featuring two female protagonists, filmed in Virginia, and premiering sometime in 2020, so that gives fans a lot to speculate about in the meantime.

How can the franchise create something new and fresh after being on TV for so many years? What kind of story will keep people locked into the drama?

There are actually a few interesting premises that the upcoming series can approach, especially with younger lead characters. Here’s what fans may want to see in the latest Walking Dead spin-off:

A bunker story

The concept of people taking shelter in a bunker for several years was introduced (but never expanded upon) back in season 3 when Sasha and Tyreese came into the picture. They had spent the first few months of the apocalypse in a neighbor’s bunker until they ran out of supplies and had to move forward.

The show could put a spin on this origin story and show two protagonists who spent years in a well-stocked bunker before they faced the harsh realities of the world. Perhaps they went into the bunker as small children and are coming out of its protection as young adults who have to figure out this new world for themselves. A bunker story would have all the makings of an interesting new origin story.

Raised on the wrong side

What happens to kids who are raised in a place like The Sanctuary or Terminus? Most survival-based shows come from a protagonist group’s perspective, but having these two new leads come from a truly evil group would tap into uncharted territory.

They could realize their way of life feels wrong and decide to strike out on their own, or perhaps they will somehow be the only survivors in a massive war and start life anew in a different location.

The future looks bright

This new Walking Dead series doesn’t necessarily have to go back to the beginning of the timeline or fall in line with the other shows. There likely won’t be any crossovers from Fear TWD and TWD to this new show any time soon, so they could start off in the near future (perhaps 10-15 years from the current timeline) and show how much the world has progressed since then.

Has communication been restored enough to bring cities and states back together? Has America started to become unified again? There are a lot of big questions about the future that these young adults could explore as they come of age in the apocalypse.

A Rick Grimes (or major character) connection

Yeah, it seems a bit cheap to throw in such a big tie to the original series, but it certainly would make people want to watch if there is a Grimes involved. Perhaps Rick has a sibling or a cousin who has survived the apocalypse and now their daughter(s) is taking on this dangerous world.

Or, the show could do this with just about any of the major characters to forge a tie into The Walking Dead. Imagine the shock of revealing that a character is a Dixon, Peletier, or whatever Michonne’s last name is on a new show.

A cross country journey

A long-distance journey across the nation with two girls who are facing the world by themselves would be epic. It could be two sisters or friends who have lost everything and everyone else and they are on a journey to a supposed safe haven on the opposite coast.

This wouldn’t be too hard to pull off if they filmed in various locations across Virginia, which has beaches and mountains in its landscape, and would give way to lots of interesting destinations instead of being stuck in one general area.

Of course, the series may come with a completely different approach that doesn’t use any of these ideas. But no matter what direction they choose, hopefully this new series will give fans something fresh and interesting to tune into long after The Walking Dead’s flagship show has aired its final episode.
