Exciting and sad news today for fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The network announced today that the show is renewed for a fourth season, but showrunner Glen Mazarra is departing.

“Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer,” said AMC in a statement.

The news is disconcerting to fans because The Walking Dead’s last showrunner, Frank Darabont, departed after season two also due to creative differences.

One has to assume that AMC has been putting some serious pressure under The Walking Dead’s creative team if this has happened twice in as many seasons.

For his part, Mazarra stepped into Darabont’s role nicely and fans regard season three as holding some of the most exciting storylines to date.

Mazarra took to his official Twitter to comment on the news. “I’ve had an amazing experience as showrunner for season three but it’s time to move on. Thank you to all the fans for their support. The Walking Dead fans are absolutely amazing. I cannot thank you enough for your support. Thank you to an immensely talented cast and crew.”

Do you think AMC has been up to no good with their decision making, having now driven two showrunners out of the production?

The Walking Dead is currently on a midseason hiatus but will resume in February.
