Days ahead of its highly-anticipated season 5 premiere, The Walking Dead has already been renewed by AMC for season 6.

The Walking Dead season 6 will presumably premiere in the fall of 2015, if history is any clue.

Scott M. Gimple will return as The Walking Dead’s showrunner and executive producer. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse will executive produce.

“We could not be more excited for October 12th as we share new episodes of ‘The Walking Dead’ with fans around the globe,” said AMC President Charlie Collier in a statement. “In advance of Sunday’s season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There’s plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort.”

The news comes as AMC also prepares a new “companion series” to The Walking Dead which will follow a different set of characters in another part of America during the zombie outbreak. The pilot for the spinoff begins shooting later this year (see some character descriptions here).

The Walking Dead season 5 will pick up shortly after the season 4 finale during which Rick and company were held prisoner at Terminus.

While it may be too early to tell if showrunners have big plans up their sleeves for season 5, do you think you’ll be sticking with the show through season 6?
