The Walking Dead cast took a break from filming season 5 to talk to media and fans at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

The team was in the middle of filming episode 7 of The Walking Dead’s fifth season when they headed west for the world’s biggest pop culture convention. At a panel earlier in the day they revealed the show’s October 12 premiere date and unveiled a big trailer.

Our first question to Andrew Lincoln, Chandler Riggs, and Danai Gurira concerned the relationship between their three characters. Are more special moments coming between Rick, Carl, and Michonne like we saw in season 4?

“It’s a little cramped in the train car right now, but once we get out… Maybe? Sure? That’s the official answer,” Lincoln told us coyly.

When asked if there could be a romantic relationship between Rick and Michonne – as fans have been openly hoping for on social media – Lincoln said they have been wondering something similar. “It’s the second question we always ask in the writer’s room. The first one is, ‘Are we going to die?’ And the second is, ‘Do we get laid?'”

As those words escaped his mouth he covered 15-year-old Riggs’ ears. “Excuse my French.”

“I wanna know too!” Riggs quipped.

Turning more serious, Gurira admitted that the major problem impeding something special between Rick and Michonne is that they’re just trying to survive at the moment.

Carl and Rick’s reunion with Judith

Today’s Walking Dead season 5 trailer appeared to depict Rick holding a baby, so it was easy to presume that the new episodes will show Judith reunite with her blood family.

When we asked about that scene showrunner Scott M. Gimple and stars like Lincoln and Riggs were hesitant to confirm it (“I didn’t even notice and then someone posted it on Instagram,” Riggs said), but producer Gale Anne Hurd was more forthcoming when we asked if shooting this special family reunion made for an emotional day on set.

“It’s funny. We have new twins this year because the twins who we used last season have grown beyond the size – but also, in previous seasons we began the show months later. Time had pass,” she said. “This time we begin immediately after Rick threw down the gauntlet and said they’re screwing with the wrong people. So these are new twins, and reuniting with people they never met was not quite the initial joyous reunion [you’d expect]. But there were a lot of misty eyes on set.”

Rick’s state of mind

Rick hit his darkest state in season 4. This time he’s emerging from that hole. “He’s made peace with all of it. I think he’s in an uncomplicated place,” Lincoln said. “‘Humanity is in me as much brutality is.’ And he realizes that both are just as important, and probably why he is still here, and his family. So I don’t think he has any conflict anymore or any moral ambiguity. He’s just very pragmatic and very dangerous, and a very formidable leader as a result.”

Where’s Beth?

Today’s trailer also revealed that Beth is now completely separated from her friends at an unknown place.

We tried to ask Beth actress Emily Kinney if she could reveal anything. Naturally, she couldn’t say much.

“She’s definitely separated from the group,” she confirmed. “I don’t want to give anything away, but she is out there.” She added that all the questions will be answered in season 5.

Since she has to stay mum on what’s ahead, Hurd took time to explain that Beth had no choice but to separate from Daryl. “She would’ve been eaten otherwise,” Hurd told us, and Daryl felt guilty about it. “He’s the one who opened the door for the dog, right? And he let his guard down – how often does that happen in the zombie apocalypse? So I’m sure there’s guilt from him that he couldn’t track down the car that drove away from him.”

Will Abraham step up?

Since the entire group is now heading to Washington D.C. to find a cure for the zombie apocalypse, we were curious if Abraham will now be taking on a larger role. “He’s still completely mission oriented. That comes before anything,” actor Michael Cudlitz explained.

Abraham will agree to whatever the group decides so long as it fits in with his plan to get to D.C. with Eugene. “If someone comes up with a plan, and the plan has what he needs to have done, we’ll do that. There’s nothing dictating that says he has to be necessarily in charge, as long as he’s doing what he has to do, because he’s just as happy to leave everybody behind and continue doing what he has to.”

The Walking Dead premieres this October on AMC.
