A new clip from The Walking Dead season 5, episode 13 finds Sasha interacting with the keeper of the weaponry named Olivia. Who is this new woman?

It’s no surprise that the roster of characters on The Walking Dead is quickly expanding as we dive deeper into Alexandria. With that in mind, each week Hypable will take a closer look at a particular new character who may or may not be a danger to Rick and company.

The character of Olivia, as diehard readers know, has been pulled straight out of The Walking Dead comic series. In both versions of the zombie apocalypse series she is in charge of the weapons at Alexandria. The photo above depicts the character in both the TV and comic series.

Olivia first appeared during last Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead when the characters (perhaps too easily*) handed over their weapons to Alexandria’s weapon room as part of deciding to stay at the compound. From here on out they are only allowed their weapons when they wish to go out for a hunt.

In this Sunday’s new episode of The Walking Dead season 5, episode 14, titled “Forget,” Olivia brings Sasha into the weapon room before she goes out for some early morning hunting. Take a look at a clip below and you’ll get a sense of Olivia’s personality:

So who is she? As the above clip suggests, Olivia is a happy-go-lucky character and a gossiper in the comic books. At one point in the comics Michonne asks Douglas (the comic version of Deanna) if she can keep her sword, and Olivia supports her in making that request.

If the comics are any indication, it doesn’t look like Olivia will be a major player in The Walking Dead television series, but she is one of many critical employees at Alexandria. Perhaps her bubbly personality will mislead Rick and company into thinking that they can easily grab their weapons whenever they want. Or, she’ll just offer some comic relief.

Olivia is one of several Alexandria residents in the comic series who conspires to kill Rick when he becomes the compound’s leader, but obviously they never pull off a successful assassination. It’d be fun to see several of the residents hatch a plot to kill him on the television show as a way to build some tension. Perhaps this’ll be a good twist for an upcoming episode?

*It was surprising that Rick and crew were willing to hand over their weapons when they agreed on settling in at Alexandria. Although Rick later grabbed a kitchen knife to keep on his person, handing over their arsenal of weaponry was a risky move. Then again, being out on the run for any longer would’ve been even riskier.

The Walking Dead resumes this Sunday. Thanks to the Walking Dead Wiki for background info on Olivia in the comics.
