The Walking Dead season 4, episode 7 continued to tell the story of the Governor post-Woodbury and ended with a big cliffhanger.

We begin tonight’s episode exactly where we left off last week. The Governor/Brian is in a pit with his new makeshift daughter Meghan. His former Woodbury associate Martinez pulls him out. Brian and the family are offered a place in Martinez’s camp where they’ll all have to contribute. The scene is interspersed with clips from a scene some time later where the Governor is cleaned up and in the camp with his new family. He vows to Meghan that they’re all going to be okay, even though she’s unsure of how good everyone is. Why would she question that? Maybe it has to do with the military tank right next to their trailer?

In their trailer home, Brian has clearly fallen for Lilly. He’s concerned about the poor quality of the place they’re living in and wishes he could do better for them.

Out on a supply run, Brian, Martinez, and a couple others continue to come across dead bodies and each has a sign around their neck. “Liar,” “Rapist,” “Murderer,” each reads. Inside a home with the “murderer,” zombies attack the guys. They also encounter a campsite with ten people. Mitch suggests robbing them for their supplies while Pete says they shouldn’t. Later they return and see that someone else raided the group. All the while, Brian is silent.

The next day things start to get interesting. Martinez invites Brian to his trailer for a round of golf. When Martinez says he can’t guarantee he can keep everyone safe, and that he could never imagine having a family again, a trigger seems to go off in the Governor. He takes a golf club to Martinez’s drunken head, then he drags Martinez into a pit of zombies where he dies.

Another day passes and Martinez’s death is realized. While on a hunt with the other two sorta-kinda leaders, Brian comes to a decision: It’s no longer safe in this camp. He grabs his family and they leave in a vehicle.

… but the attempt fails. They run into a group of zombies blocking the road, and the next morning he kills the nicer guy named Pete who refused to raid a camp earlier in the week. He forms an alliance with Mitch, the guy who wanted to take out the campsite.

All is well! Almost. A morning meeting shows that everything is organized at the Governor-led camp. Mitch and Brian are working well together. That night, Brian wonders in front of Lilly if they can find a safer place to live. The following day Meghan is almost bit by a zombie. A nice shot by Brian kills the walker.

And then we return to episode 5’s cliffhanger. The Governor is on the edge of the forest outside the prison and observing Rick and Carl in their garden. Walking further around the woods, Brian comes across Michonne and Hershel. He aims at the two, but the episode ends there.

Previews for next week episode – the midseason finale – show that there will be an all out war between Rick and the Governor once again as the latter tries to overtake the prison for safety.
