Our Walking Dead season 4, episode 5 recap breaks down the events of Sunday night’s story titled “Internment.”

Last week’s The Walking Dead season 4 episode ended with Rick and Carol parting ways – for now. On another supply mission, Michonne says she no longer needs to keep trying to search for The Governor.

Episode 5 starts grim as Rick is driving back to the prison just after saying goodbye to Carol. He’s noticeably hurt by what had to take place. At the prison, Hershel, Glen, and Sasha are taking care of a sick patient. The two gentlemen take one of the sick humans out of his holding cell because he’s past the point of no return, and they kill him as soon as he awakens as a zombie. Moments later, Maggie asks Hershel if she can see Glen, but he refuses because of the bad condition he’s in.

Back at home, Maggie lets Rick in and the former immediately asks where Carol is. Rick reveals her killings, and Maggie says that he made the right choice. Rick then goes to give Carl food for the people who are being isolated for safety, and his son says that he’s eager to get out.

Back in the infected wing, Hershel is trying to treat Dr. Caleb who’s reached the infection point where blood is coming out of his eyes. The doctor insists that Hershel focus on those who are still able to be saved. After saying bye to Caleb, another patient is coughing up blood, falls to the floor, and begins his zombie transformation. Hershel and Sasha wheel him out as “Oats in the Water” by Ben Howard plays. Talking to Rick, Hershel says he still believes there’s a reason for all of this – a reason why this apocalypse happened.

On his way out to talk to Rick about Carol, Hershel is closing cells when he sees Sasha has fallen and may be close to death. Meanwhile, another human just woke up from her infection transformation and appears to be a zombie. Hershel wakes Sasha up, but she’s still very sick.

Next, an intense sequence occurs in which a couple of the infected close in on Hershel, while one of the kids is an unlikely savior and directs one of them away from the fallen farmer. Maggie tries to get in and help Glen, but she’s held up by a locked door.

Outside, Rick and Carl are building wooden supports for the fence because the walkers are starting to push it down. One of the wooden supports breaks and the zombies knock down one of the fences. The two men make a run for it and grab some guns. Rick gives his son a brief lesson on assault rifle operations. The two start firing at the zombies who have taken out yet another fence.

What happens next are a series of cuts between inside and outside of the prison. Hershel is killing zombies inside who have turned while Rick and Carl are taking care of those outside. Maggie finally makes it in and helps Hershel take care of the very sick Glen. Both teams eventually get their situations under control, and all of the humans miraculously survive.

Just then, Daryl, Tyreese, Bob, and Michonne return. Tyreese goes straight to Sasha and is relieved to see her alive. Hershel is ordered to rest by Maggie, and “Oats in the Water” again begins playing. Hershel sheds a couple tears as he grabs a book (a bible?) of the hands of the deceased doctor.

The next day Michonne and Hershel go out on a drive of some sort. At Rick’s garden, he and Carl split a couple of seeds. The camera goes outside of the prison fences where we The Governor has returned (!!!).
