The Walking Dead season 4 is in the midst of casting ahead of filming over the summer, and today we’re learning of the newest season regular.

Larry Gilliard Jr., known to some as a D’Angelo Barksdale on The Wire, will play Bob Stookey, “a former Army medic who is deeply haunted by his past — both before and after the apocalypse,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s a loner, though he maintains a charming yet self-deprecating façade. In the Walking Dead comics, Bob Stookey was a Woodbury resident (and alcoholic) responsible for saving the Governor’s life after he was tortured by Michonne,” they also go on to report.

Gilliard Jr.’s character isn’t the only one who’s recently been set up as a season regular. At the top of this month we learned that Chad Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Emily Kinney have also been promoted. They play Tyreese, Sasha, and Beth respectively.

The Walking Dead is expected to begin filming next month, with season 4 premiering this October on AMC.

The Walking Dead season 3 scored record ratings for the network as fans watched The Governor and Rick’s respective sides duke it out. Circumstances came to a climax when The Governor’s people turned against him. He and a couple of followers then ran away. Meanwhile, Rick’s people took in the former residents of Woodbury at the prison, where it looks like a large portion of season 4 may take place.

Some fans were hoping that we would move on from the prison and Woodbury entirely by the end of season 3.

We’ll continue to pass along The Walking Dead casting developments as we get closer to production.
